New Years, New Beginnings: Addition and Subtraction

Setting a New Years resolution is an empowering tradition many people participate in. Typically it's to quit smoking, drinking or other bad habits; or it could be to start eating healthier, exercising, or other good habits. Essentially the goal is to improve your life by either adding something that makes you happy, or subtracting something that makes you unhappy.

Life is an equation; it's a balance. So the challenge -other than sticking to it- is to decide if you need to add a good thing or subtract a bad. In a way, adding a good thing will always equal subtracting a not-so-good thing (and vice versa). For example, if someone decides to quit smoking, they'll need to up their will-power and patience (if smoking was stress-related) to actually follow through.

Before you decide on a resolution, you should consider how realistic it really is; there's no benefit in setting an unrealistic goal now, is there? Evaluate your capabilities (both strengths and weaknesses), as well as your desires, and come to a compromise between the two. Maybe you're the type of person who wont be able to cut sugar from your diet entirely but would do better by cutting down by increments. You know yourself better than anyone; what challenges you can handle, and what you'll give up on. Plan accordingly.

If you happen to choose a resolution that will be a daily thing, there's a simple little way to help you stick to it: [Click Here]
Share your struggles and triumphs with past New Years resolutions in the comments below! Don't be shy, go deep. Were you too unrealistic? Did you make a resolution that simply didn't fit you as a person? Did you surprise yourself when you accomplished a seemingly 'simple' yet absurdly realistic goal? Inspire others; open up, and share your story! :)
